The Christmas cactus (Zygocactus) originates from the jungles of South America. Its vibrant flowers bloom once a year, showcasing a range of colors including fuchsia, yellow, salmon, pink, white, orange, and red. Sometimes, the flowers even display a combination of these colors. These cacti are tropical plants that thrive in sunlight, but their blooms last longer in cooler temperatures. It is important to keep them away from heat sources such as heaters, fireplaces, radiators, furnace ducts, and to find a sunny location indoors. If placed outdoors during the summer, it is best to position them in an area with a mix of sun and shade to prevent burning.
To provide the appropriate amount of water, wait until the top layer of soil is dry and slightly moist towards the bottom before watering. The plant should be watered until the soil is thoroughly saturated, and any excess water should be drained from the bottom. Do not water again until the top half of the soil feels dry to the touch. It is crucial to use well-drained soil, and a high-quality cactus mix or a mixture of regular potting soil and coarse sand can be used if specific cactus soil is not available.
In order for the Christmas cactus to bloom in time for Christmas, it requires a rest period. Reduce watering, leaving the soil slightly moist. Provide at least 14 hours of darkness at night and ample sunlight during the day until buds begin to form. It is recommended to start this dark period in early September. Once the buds have formed, it may take 10 to 12 weeks for the flowers to fully bloom. Pruning the Christmas cactus after blooming can stimulate new growth and improve blooming for the following year. Additionally, in the spring, apply a diluted solution of liquid houseplant fertilizer to new growth that appears two to three weeks after it starts.
Depending on the condition of the soil, it is suggested to repot the cactus every 2 to 3 years. This repotting should be done in the spring. If you encounter a Sunset Dancer Christmas Cactus Plant (Zygocactus) in a 2" pot, it prefers morning sun or very bright, indirect light. This plant can be found at Hirt's Gardens and is suitable for gardens and patios.
