The Christmas cactus, native to South American jungles, blooms once a year with a combination of colors. These tropical plants thrive in sunlight and cooler temperatures. To prevent damage, keep them away from heat sources like heaters, fireplaces, and radiators. Indoors, place them in a sunny location, and outdoors, choose a spot with a sun/shade mix to prevent burning.

To water the plant properly, wait until the top of the soil is dry and the bottom is slightly moist. Water the plant until the soil is saturated, draining any excess water. Don't water again until the top half of the soil feels dry to the touch. Well-drained soil is crucial, and a cactus mix or a combination of regular potting soil and coarse sand can be used.

For the Christmas cactus to bloom by Christmas, it needs a rest period. Reduce watering, leaving the soil partly moist. Provide 14 hours of darkness at night and sunlight during the day, starting in early September until the buds form. It takes 10 to 12 weeks for the buds to fully bloom. After flowering, prune the plant to encourage new growth and better blooming next year. In spring, use a diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer two to three weeks after new growth appears.

Repotting the cactus should be done every two to three years, depending on soil depletion, and it is best done in spring.
