Introducing our Exotic Holiday Cactus Flowers, blooming just in time for the holidays! These tropical cacti, also known as Christmas Cactus or Schlumbergera, are native to Southeastern Brazil and thrive in humid rainforests on rocks and trees. They are renowned for their vibrant flowers that typically bloom towards the end of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, with the possibility of blooming in April as well. Many people love keeping these cacti as houseplants indoors or placing them on their front porch or yard. With proper care, they can live for over fifty years.

Let's talk about the ideal placement and planting for these cacti. Holiday Cactus cannot tolerate full sun, so it is best to place them near a north or east-facing window. If kept outside, choose a shady location where they can receive indirect light. Since these plants are tropical, they require consistent levels of humidity, and using a water tray underneath them helps maintain the moisture in the air. Avoid placing them near air conditioners or heaters as this can dry them out. The temperature should ideally be around 60 to 65F, except when they're blooming.

When it comes to planting, Christmas Cactus prefers quick-draining, sandy soil. A suitable mixture would be two parts regular potting soil and one part sand, or you can include peat moss, perlite, or compost. To prevent root rot, ensure that the pot you use has drainage holes. Repotting is necessary every two to three years, preferably in spring. Choose fresh soil and a pot that allows enough space for the root system without being excessively large.

Now let's discuss watering and blooming. It is important to allow the top layer of soil to almost dry out before watering these cacti. If the stems start to shrivel, it indicates the need for more water. Pay close attention to the plant's water needs, as they may require more during hotter months. Avoid overwatering or underwatering. You can check the moisture distribution by inserting your finger into the soil. Watering frequency varies based on the season. When it's dry outdoors, water every two to three days. Indoors, during cooler or humid conditions, water once a week. In fall and winter, reduce watering to encourage blooming. In October, completely stop watering until November. After the plant blooms, refrain from watering for one month to allow the plant to rest.

Flower blooming for Christmas Cactus requires specific conditions that you can manipulate to your advantage. These cacti are thermos-photoperiodic and will bud when the daytime is equal to the nighttime, and the temperatures are around 55F. Maintain this steady temperature from September to October, and during mid-October, place them in complete darkness during the night. If necessary, you can move them to a secluded room or cover them with a dark blanket. Blooming may not occur if the temperatures drop any lower. Once you observe budding, gradually increase light and humidity. If buds appear too early, lower the temperature to discourage them, and then raise it again to encourage blooming. After blooming and giving the plant several weeks to rest, you can prune the leaves to promote a healthier and more robust plant.

Let's address the issue of bud drop and fertilizing. Bud drop, when the plant unexpectedly sheds its buds, can be quite frustrating. This typically occurs due to overwatering or insufficient light or moisture. If this happens, decrease the watering frequency, add fertilizer, and try relocating the plant to a better-suited space. As for fertilizing, you can feed Christmas Cactus up to four times a year with a balanced blooming fertilizer that has a 20-20-20 ratio. Stop fertilizing approximately one month before the plant is expected to bloom.

Our Holiday Cactus is available in a 4" pot, featuring multiple plants blooming in white color. It blooms between Thanksgiving and Christmas, making it a perfect gift for anyone. Bring the beauty of Exotic Cactus Flowers into your home this holiday season with our Homegrown by 9GreenBox collection.
