Christmas Cactus, also known as Schlumbergera, is a species that grows epiphytically on trees or epilithically on rocks. They can form large shrubs with woody bases, reaching heights of up to 1.2m (4ft). These cacti have green stems that act as photosynthetic organs and are composed of segments. The segments come in two forms: strongly flattened cladodes or more cylinder-shaped segments with a spiral pattern of areoles.

The areoles, which may have wool and bristles, are where the flower buds appear. The flowers of Christmas Cacti can hang downwards and be radially symmetrical or be held horizontally, with one side differing from the other. Each flower has 20-30 tepals, with the outer tepals being short, unconnected, and spread out or curved backwards. The inner tepals are longer and often fused together at the base, creating a floral tube that gives the appearance of a "flower within a flower". The flowers also produce nectar in a chamber at the base of the tube.

Blooming between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Christmas Cacti are a true gem of winter. Their splendid blossoms bring color and joy when we need it the most. The style of the flowers is usually dark red and has a stigma with 6-8 lobes. The length of the style plus stigma is approximately the same as the stamens.
