The hardiest of all banana plants is Musa Basjoo. When appropriately mulched, it can withstand temperatures as low as -20 degrees. During warm weather months, this variety has the ability to grow a remarkable 2 feet in just one week. When fully mature, the plant reaches a height of 18 feet. It is able to produce flowers and fruits when it reaches a height of 10 feet or after growing 35 leaves. However, it is important to note that the bananas produced by this plant are not suitable for consumption.

The attractive Musa Basjoo with its broad leaves can be cultivated in nearly every state. As long as the ground is properly mulched during the coldest months, it can tolerate temperatures as cold as 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. When the temperature drops to 40 degrees, the plant will cease to actively grow. At 28 degrees, the leaves will begin to wither and can be pruned down to a height of 2 or 3 feet. As the warmer season approaches, the plant regenerates rapidly. It will continue to grow vigorously, but this growth is halted by frost.
