Heavenly bamboo, also known as Nandina domestica, is a broadleaf evergreen shrub native to Japan, China, and India. It is widely cultivated for its attractive foliage and striking fruit display. This rhizomatous shrub typically grows to a height of 4-8 feet and a width of 2-4 feet, with an upright growth habit. In St. Louis, it tends to be semi-evergreen to deciduous, and may grow shorter due to winter dieback of stems. Despite belonging to the Barberry family, it is commonly referred to as heavenly bamboo because of its cane-like stems and compound leaves that resemble bamboo.
Small whitish flowers with yellow anthers emerge in late spring in loose, upright clusters, followed by sprays of spherical, red berries with two seeds. These berries persist from fall to spring, adding visual interest to the winter landscape. Heavenly bamboo thrives in average, well-drained soils with medium moisture, and can tolerate a wide range of soil types, although it prefers moist, humus-rich conditions. It also benefits from consistent watering. In warmer winter climates, this shrub remains evergreen.
When fully mature, heavenly bamboo can reach a height of up to 8 feet. It is suitable for hardiness zones 6-10. Please note that live plants offered by 9GreenBox may vary in actual size and shape from the pictures shown.
