Cultivating Vining Jasmine from Seed

To grow jasmine from seed, start the process around three months before your local last frost date. Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours, then plant them in small containers filled with moist, nutrient-rich potting soil. Cover the containers with plastic wrap or domes and place them in direct sunlight. Germination can take up to 30 days.

Once the seedlings emerge, remove the covers. Keep the soil moist until the seedlings develop two sets of true leaves, then transplant them to a larger container or, if the timing is right, directly into the garden.

Potting and Repotting Vining Jasmine

Indoor-grown jasmine plants do not need to be repotted as frequently as other houseplants, but it's recommended to transfer them to a pot with fresh soil every three years or so. When repotting, use a high-quality potting mix and prune the roots to allow for ample growth space.

Vining jasmine plants grown in containers will require a large pot and a sturdy climbing support. Ensure the pot has ample drainage holes, and use a moist, peat-based potting mix. These potted plants can be moved outdoors during the warmer months, but should be brought back indoors before temperatures drop below 40°F (4°C).

Overwintering Vining Jasmine

If possible, bring your vining jasmine plant indoors for the winter, as temperatures around the freezing point are too low for this plant to tolerate. If the plant is growing in the ground, reduce watering about six weeks before the average first frost date to inhibit new growth.
