Product Description: Christmas Cactus
The Christmas Cactus, also known as Thanksgiving or holiday cactus, boasts beautiful foliage and vibrant flowers. Unlike other desert cacti, this plant is native to the rainforests of southern Brazil and requires a unique care routine. Instead of going dormant in winter, the Christmas cactus blooms with magical flowers that emerge from long, distinctive stems.
This low-maintenance houseplant is perfect for any living space. Our healthy plants are directly sourced from California. Upon receiving your succulent, simply open the box and place it on a well-ventilated, sunlit windowsill. Only water when the soil feels dry to the touch.
Potting and Repotting:
When potting your Christmas Cactus, remember to prioritize drainage. Use well-draining soil and a pot with drainage holes. Repotting is best done after flowering but before new shoots appear (February to March). By repotting during this time, your cactus will have ample time and energy to recover and adjust to its new home. Choose a pot that is at least 10% larger than its previous one, ensuring it is clean and made from a porous material such as concrete, terracotta, or ceramic.
How to Make Christmas Cactus Bloom:
Follow these instructions to encourage blooming for the holiday season:
Propagation:
Propagating the Christmas Cactus is easy with stem cuttings. After the blooming period, use a clean knife or scissors to cut off 2-3 sections of stems. Let the cuttings callous for a few days in a cool, dry place. Then, place them in a cup of water or well-drained cactus mix soil, ensuring that about an inch of the cutting is covered. Keep the cuttings in a humid, bright spot away from direct sunlight. Rooting takes about a couple of weeks. If propagating in water, wait for the roots to grow a few inches before transferring them to potting soil.
Care Guide:
Light: Christmas cacti prefer bright, indirect light. Place them near a window with sheer curtains or on a table a few feet away from a sunny window. Protect them from direct sunlight, especially during warmer months. The lighting requirements may change with the seasons, requiring slightly brighter light in spring and summer and slightly reduced light in late fall and winter to promote flower bud development. Water: Keep the soil consistently moist during spring and summer, watering when the top 2 inches are dry. In late fall and winter, reduce watering frequency and allow the soil to dry out more between waterings. Avoid waterlogging and use room-temperature water. Temperature: Maintain a room temperature between 60°F to 70°F. Protect the succulents from drafts or cold windows during winter. To encourage flower bud formation, provide cooler temperatures between 50°F to 55°F for a few weeks in late fall. Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix formulated for cacti or succulents. Add perlite or coarse sand to improve drainage. Feed the plants monthly with diluted fertilizer during the growing season.
FAQ:
Q: Is the Christmas Cactus toxic to humans and pets? A: The Christmas Cactus is generally non-toxic to humans and pets. However, exercise caution with any fertilizers or pesticides used on the plant.
Q: What are common problems with the Christmas Cactus? A: Common challenges include browning leaves from inadequate humidity or excess direct sunlight, failure to bloom from insufficient darkness during bud formation, root rot from overwatering and poor drainage, and wilting or drooping stems from underwatering or dry conditions. Q: What should I do after receiving my box? A: Carefully unpack and inspect your plant for any damage or stress. Place it in a well-lit area, away from direct sunlight, and let it acclimate to its new environment for a few days before watering. Follow specific care instructions provided for your plant.
Q: What should I do if there is an issue with my order? A: If your plants arrive broken or dead, we will gladly offer a replacement. We strive to accommodate your needs. Please let us know if there are any issues.
