No Scent is Sweeter than a Jasmine’s!
Jasmine, known for its captivating fragrance, is native to the Middle East and Asia and comes in various varieties. Whether you choose to keep them as houseplants or grow them in your garden, these plants thrive in warm and sunny environments. Our selection includes the Arabian Jasmine, Brazilian Jasmine, Pink Jasmine, Night Blooming Jasmine, Maid of Orleans, Confederate, and Star Jasmine, giving you plenty of options to choose from!
Placement
Jasmine plants require full, bright sun throughout the day. While they can tolerate some afternoon shade, it's important to provide them with as much light as possible. Place them near a bright south-facing window to maximize their exposure. In colder regions below zone 7, it's advisable to transfer the plants to pots and bring them indoors during winter. Jasmine plants cannot withstand temperatures below 40F, with the ideal temperature range being 60F to 80F.
Soil and Pruning
For optimal growth, use a blend of organic porous material, peat moss, bark, and compost. The soil should have excellent drainage to prevent root rot. Provide a spacious pot for your jasmine plant, especially if it is a climbing variety that requires a trellis for support. Regularly trim the plants to maintain their upright and sturdy shape, removing any dead or dying foliage to encourage new growth.
Watering
Avoid keeping the soil soggy. Allow the top one to two inches of soil to dry before watering, but do not let the soil completely dry out. Check the soil moisture by inserting your finger into it. Depending on the temperature, water the plants once or more a week, ensuring that the water fully soaks through the pot and drains out. Humidity is essential, as jasmine plants are sensitive to dry air caused by air conditioners and heaters. Mist the plant or use a water tray to increase humidity if the leaves appear dull.
Fertilizer
During the growing season, apply a liquid fertilizer rich in phosphorous and potassium every two to four weeks to promote abundant blooms. In winter, stop fertilizing and reduce watering. The plants may lose some leaves and go dormant, requiring less sunlight during this period. With consistent cool temperatures, jasmine plants can still bloom during winter.
Pests and Fungus
Jasmine plants are susceptible to pests such as whiteflies, mites, and aphids. To deter infestations, spray a solution of soap and water onto the leaves. Additionally, manually remove any bugs you spot. For fungus-related issues, which can cause discoloration and wilted leaves, apply a mixture of baking soda spray and ensure proper aeration.
JASMINE PLANT – A small shrub or vine cultivated for its sweet-scented flowers. It can be used as an ingredient in perfumes and to brew jasmine tea. It typically grows to a height of 1.6 to 9.8 ft and can be grown indoors or outdoors.
GROWING A JASMINE PLANT – Jasmine plants are easy to grow and prefer well-drained soil. Regular watering and fertilizing are necessary. Partial to light shade is ideal for these plants. To encourage abundant jasmine flower growth, use a phosphorous-rich fertilizer.
TAKING CARE OF JASMINE PLANT – The most common pests for jasmine plants are whiteflies, nematodes, and mealybugs. To prevent these destructive insects, apply neem oil to the soil.
PRUNING – Depending on the variety of your jasmine plant, pruning methods may vary. For shrub varieties, the goal is to maintain the desired size and shape. Some varieties grow slowly, while others require more frequent trimming. If your jasmine plant is a vine, regularly use a trellis and secure weaker vines for support. Remove excess vines as needed.
